Arthur W. Currier

U.S. Army veteran

Arthur W. Currier, 84, of Shamrock Drive, Warwick, passed peacefully into the arms of Our Lord February 14, 2009 at Rhode Island Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Marguerite M. “Peg” (Simonini) Currier. They were married for 62 years.

Born in Johnston, a son of the late Thomas J. and Mary E. (Bradshaw) Currier, he lived in Warwick for most of his life. Arthur served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a member of the First Cavalry. He was a recipient of a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a member of William Shields Jr. Post # 43 American Legion.

Upon his return to the States, he began work as an insurance adjuster, first with the General Adjustment Bureau and then as an independent insurance adjuster with Currier/Marx Claims Service. He later formed Arthur W. Currier Adjusting Company with his sons and daughter. A member of Ss. Rose & Clement parish, he served as a Eucharistic minister. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus and a member of Warwick Council #2295 K of C.

Arthur’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was happiest when surrounded by the noise and commotion that a large family brings. He was often heard to say in the midst of a large gathering, “It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Arthur is survived by his loving children, James Currier and his wife, Karen, of North Kingstown, Judith Currier Winter and her husband, Ronald, of Grand Haven, Mich., John Currier and his wife, Joyce, of Warwick, Jenifer Currier Lloyd and her husband, Thomas, of Hampden, Maine and Joyce Currier Brown and her husband, Steven, with whom Arthur made his home. He was the devoted grandfather of 15: Jessica Cloud, Christopher Currier (P.P.D.), Ronald J. Winter, Heather Streets, Gregory Winter, Alicia Vega, Michael Winter, Kelley Currier, Sarah Caddell, Erin Deluca, Caitlin Brown, Elizabeth Lloyd, Genevieve Currier, Rebecca Lloyd and Molly Brown. He was the proud great-poppa of 10 and was awaiting the arrival of the 11th in March. He is also survived by a brother, Francis Currier of St. Augustine, Fal., and a sister, Zita Wilkinson of Palos Verdes, Calif. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas and George, and sisters Elsie and Beatrice and a grandson, Matthew Winter.

His funeral will be held Feb. 18 at 8:45 a.m. from Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Clement Church, Long St., Warwick. Visiting hours are Feb. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to Ss. Rose and Clement Parish would be appreciated.
