How would you like to win a wagon full of top-shelf liquor valued at $700?

Kelly-Gazzerro VFW Post 2812, located at 1418 Plainfield Pike on the Cranston-Johnston line, has your ticket for that prize – along with a night of Italian food and oldies and doo-wop music.

The event, officially known as the Oldies Dinner Dance, will be held this Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at 6 p.m. at the VFW Post.

The evening, however, is much, much more than fun, food and fellowship. It is a fundraiser to support veterans – who, in some cases, are homeless – and their families, and last year’s event shattered all previous records and resulted in the donation of $3,500 in gift cards and money to the Providence VA Medical Center. Those donations, in turn, provided food, gifts and money to 21 veterans and their families at Christmas.

Moreover, as event chairman Raymond Denisewich explained earlier this week: “We paid for eight fuel deliveries to veterans, including a 96-year-old World War II veteran, as well as six utility bill payments and a few car payments so that some veterans would not lose their transportation.”

John “Jack” Hill also announced that Saturday’s Dinner Dance is a joint venture including participation from the Giovanni Folcarelli Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 1, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Rhode Island and includes its Service Office, the American Legion Chapter No. 1, the Military Order of Foreign Wars, the Association of the U.S. Army and the Reserve Officers Association.

“Our mission continues to ensure that we have the financial stability to assist all veterans and their families, particularly in their time of need,” Hill said. “You don’t have to be a veteran to attend. Just purchase a ticket and take a chance on winning that wagon full of liquor, and please remember the proceeds go a long, long way.”

Tickets cost $35 per person and include a family-style Italian dinner prepared and served by the staff at Spirito’s Restaurant, which is now based at the Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post.

Tony Weaver will be playing his famous oldies and doo-wop music.

Tickets for the wagon full of liquor cost $1 each or $5 for six. Tickets may be purchased at the post or by calling 942-9500. The drawing will be held Saturday at approximately 9:30 p.m. and people do not have to be present to win.

For more information about the event and raffle, call Denisewich at 644-8066 or Hill at 641-2916.
