Pinewood Derby rolls on in Cranston
On Saturday, Feb. 11, at St. David's on the Hill in Cranston, Cub Scouts Pack 6 held their annual Pinewood Derby race.
Following strict Official Narragansett Council Pinewood Derby Rules 2013 Edition, cars had to be of a certain weight, no more than five ounces, have appropriate wheels and axels, and nothing could be pre-made or store bought.
"It was so much fun sharing in the experience of the pinewood derby with my son. It brought back so many memories from doing the event when I was a Cub Scout with my Dad. Aidan and I can't wait for next year's Pinewood Derby," said City Councilman Chris Paplauskas. Aidan's car was named "Thundercar."
The pack is the whole group made up of five dens: Tiger grade 1, Wolf grade 2, Bear grade 3, Webelos grade 4 and Arrow of Light grade 5.
"We had 41 cars race and it was a great race day. We give awards for individual den races – first, second and third – along with first place for the pack race in which the top three cars from each den participate in," said Sarah Evans, Pack 6 Committee chairperson.
They also gave out specialty awards voted on by the adult leaders for the most fuel-efficient, best paint job, most scout spirited, car most likely made by the scout, funniest and Arrow of Light choice, which is a car voted on by the fifth grade den.
