Police seek help finding robbers
Cranston detectives are looking for any information they can find about two suspects who held up the Bestway Food Mart at 1353 Park Ave. just before 10 p.m. Sunday night.
The clerk told police two men rushed into the store and one of them reached into a backpack, pulled out a shotgun and demanded all the money. Police said the clerk resisted the suspects and was punched several times, as one of them came around the counter and tried to open the cash register but failed. The clerk told police the robbers gave up trying to open the cash drawer and grabbed several packs of Newport cigarettes and ran out the door. Police said the clerk chased the other suspect outside and another struggle ensued, leaving the clerk with a cut under his left eye that he refused treatment for.
Major Robert Ryan of the Cranston Police said he was grateful that no one was seriously hurt in the robbery and that he believes they were lucky this time.
“It [resisting armed suspects] is not something we recommend,” he said. “It’s better to just comply with their demands and focus more on being a good witness. This could have been much worse.”
The suspects were described as black males between the ages of 18 and 20, wearing all dark clothing and black ski masks. They were last seen running toward the dumpster behind the building. Ryan said they so far have not seen any evidence that links this robbery with any others.
The robbery is still under investigation and anyone with any information is asked to call the Cranston Police Criminal Investigation Unit at 477-5140.
