Rep. Robert Lancia (R-Dist. 16, Cranston) is calling on the state to create a new tax exemption for income derived from military pensions in an effort to entice veterans to stay in Rhode Island.
"As a disabled Navy veteran I understand how difficult it can be for my fellow servicemen and women to survive on their military pensions alone. Rhode Island is one of only a handful of states that fully taxes income derived from these retirement funds leaving us at a severe disadvantage when trying to convince veterans to stay here. This tax exemption will slow the population drain that has plagued our state and help us avoid losing one of our congressional seats," said Lancia.
Rep. Lancia's bill would make Rhode Island more welcoming to veterans by fully exempting military pensions from the state income tax by 2022.
The state has struggled to match the population growth in other parts of the country leading to worries that it will lose a seat in the House of Representatives. Some have proposed offering tax incentives or even payments to new residents in an effort to increase the state's population but few see this as a viable option. Lancia hopes that the exemption will help the state retain its population of over 65,000 veterans and encourage more to move to Rhode Island.
Rep. Bobby Nardolillo co-sponsored the bill and added, "Rhode Island is a wonderful state with a proud military heritage. Our citizens have defended this nation since the American Revolution and yet we continue to lag behind other states in ensuring that our veterans are taken care of. This act would be a way to keep our population from shrinking any further with the added benefit of protecting those who protected us."
The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Bobby Nardolillo (R-Dist. 28, Coventry), Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick), Rep. Kenneth A. Marshall (D-Dist. 68, Bristol, Warren) and Rep. James N. McLaughlin (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls).

I didn't know until now that military pensions WERE taxed by the state. Thank God we have people like State Rep Camille Vella-Wilkinson in the State House to correct it.
Those who risked their lives for their country shouldn't ever have their pensions taxed. That's un-American.
Congratulations to those in the State House that recognize that and are working hard to fix it.

Hello again WwkVoter:
Thanks for driving right at the heart of the make-believe "mayor's" strategy, if it can be called such: Trying to confuse and mislead voters. Using a fake title is his way of claiming some kind of legitimacy for what has been and continues to be a pathetic and futile candidacy.
Maybe someone who has a history of tax delinquencies and ethically questionable campaign activities (like paying office rent to someone who previously paid off a delinquent tax bill on his property) should know that voters are smarter than that, and will no doubt overwhelmingly defeat his candidacy again this November.

I would expand the legislation to include plumbers, electricians, carpenters, lawyers, bankers, accountants, police officers, fire fighters, priests, bricklayers, landscapers, roofers, dog groomers, grocery store clerks, chimney sweeps, massage therapists, and gardeners. For starters.

Mr. Corrente, RI taxes EVERYTHING; I believe there's a committee in an office adjoining the Governor's which is tasked with finding new and creative ways to tax (including fees) to feed the ever-expanding entitlements and GA perks which emanate from the General Fund.

We should tax people who erect illegal campaign signs on state and city property in direct violation of the law. For example, Richard "the fake mayor" Corrente. In his latest act of buffoonery, Corrente contacted the Warwick Police and made a complaint, not once, but twice, that I am "stealing" his campaign signs. The conversation with the very nice police officer included Corrente's claim that he challenged the law with the ACLU and the courts found that the city statute was unconstitutional. What he failed to listen to was the part of the decision that indicates "ON PRIVATE PROPERTY" .
The state regulation still stands. Any political sign erected on state or city property can be removed by anyone at anytime. Corrente claims that I removed 40 signs from private property. Not so. Each sign was removed from traffic control boxes around the city and I have before and after photos of each location.
Corrente evidently doesn't realize that making a complaint stating that someone is stealing, when that statement is a fabrication, is slander. I would have thought that after being a defendant in dozens of lawsuits, that he would have had a clue about that. Guess not.
