Falcons down Bengals for first win of season

After dropping its first three matches to start the season, the Cranston West girls’ volleyball team got in the win column with a 3-1 triumph over Bay View on Monday.

The Falcons took the first set handily, 25-14, before dropping the second, 25-21.

They would then battle to a 26-24 win in the third set, but the fourth and final set wasn’t nearly as close, with West clinching the match with a 25-12 win.

Senior Emilia Vaziri dominated the Bengals with 14 kills and four aces, and Lauren Plociak used her big serve to compile seven aces.

West was looking to continue its winning ways at Chariho on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time. Falcons roll past Mariners Freshman Isabella Corso and seniors Lily Janigian, Shannon Feng and Alice Lim earned victories in their respective singles matches, while the teams of Lauren Knasin and Jackie Carrascoza and Rachel Perrotta and Morgan DiMaio won doubles matches, as the Cranston West girls’ tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Narragansett on Monday.

Other than dropping the No. 1 doubles match, the Falcons had a flawless day on the court to improve their record to 2-1 on the young season.

The Falcons were set to host Coventry on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

They’ll also travel to North Smithfield on Friday for a 4 p.m. match. ’Bolts remain unbeaten with sweep It was a relatively stress-free night for the Cranston East girls’ volleyball team on Monday, as it swept Burrillville, 3-0, behind set wins of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-7.

After defeating Central, 3-1, in its season opener, East continued its strong play against the Broncos.

The ’Bolts were led by senior Samantha Levy, who posted seven aces and four digs, while junior Joanna Wong contributed 12 assists and three aces in the winning effort.

East will be back in action tonight at 6:30 p.m. at North Smithfield (2-1). Falcons continue strong start The Cranston West boys’ soccer team improved to 2-1 in Division II with a comeback, 3-2 victory at Hope on Monday afternoon.

The Blue Wave got two goals from Marvens Marcelin in the first half to give the home team a 2-1 lead at the break.

However, the Falcons came out strong in the second half, scoring two unanswered goals to clinch the win.

West got goals from Gil DelValle, Ricardo Foster and Angelo Laurenza, while Zach Ramsey chipped in with an assist.

Senior keeper Gianluca Laurenza stopped five of seven Hope shots sent on goal in the game.

West will be looking for its third straight win when it travels to Moses Brown today for a 3:45 p.m. start.
