The Cranston West Falcons outdueled the Coventry Oakers 14-7 during Friday night’s Injury Fund football game at Cranston Stadium.

The Falcons first touchdown came in the first quarter when Cam Alves, a senior quarterback, ran a keeper left, four yards into pay dirt and put West up 6-0. Next, Matt Carvalho, also a senior, added the extra point and extended the Falcons advantage to 7-0.

Shortly after that, West senior Nathaniel Sena, intercepted the ball and gave the Falcons great field position at the Coventry 12.

Then on first down, Alves rushed left 11 yards to the 2. Next, Andrew Dionizio, another senior, rushed up the gut for a touchdown and upped the West margin to 14-0.

West head coach Tom Milewski was happy with the contributions he got from his seniors throughout the contest.

“Matt Carvalho stepped up as a punter tonight for us a little bit and Cam Alves did a nice job,” Milewski said. “Andrew Dionizio had some key blocks. Defensively, we had Noah Robert and Garrett Jackman that did very well. Brought some pressure. We were physical which is what we needed and what we wanted to see tonight and going forward.”

Coventry earned its lone score on a fourth-and-2 from the West 31 when Will Turner, a junior quarterback, tossed a screen pass to Logan Carson, who took it all the way to the house and got the Oakers within 14-7.

While Milewski was happy with the way his team began the contest, he felt his squad slowed down in the second quarter, and that’s something they won’t be able to do in a full game.

“We’ve got to improve on finishing right now,” Milewski said. “We’re not finishing plays. We started off very well, but we had a little bit of a letdown midway through the second quarter and we’re not going to be able to do that.”

“And we had a couple foolish penalties,” Milewski continued. “An encroachment up front, but on a positive note, we had two takeaways on the defensive side.”

Another defender that stood out on Friday night for the Falcons was junior cornerback Myles Chung, who made a couple big plays on defense to prevent two touchdowns.

“Myles Chung had the two knockdowns in the corner of the end zone which was nice,” Milewski said. “That’s going to be big going down the road. We’ve got to be able to defend the pass.”

Next up for West will be the defending D-I champion, Bishop Hendricken Hawks, who will arrive at Cranston Stadium on Friday night.

“Hendricken is Hendricken,” Milewski said. “They’re a great program. Coach (Keith) Croft does a nice job. It’s a big test for us, but we’re hoping to measure up to them and give them a fight and see what happens afterwards.”

“But you know the kids talk about it, we talk about it all the time, about wanting to be at the top of the mountain and Hendricken is the top of the mountain, so we’ve got to get there. So in order to get to the top, we have to go through Bishop Hendricken.”
