On Sept. 28, the Cranston YMCA held a Zumbathon in memory of Mariella Major, formerly of Cranston, who was a group exercise instructor who passed away of cancer last December. With the help and support of Mariella's family and friends, the event raised funds to support facility improvements that she was passionate about. Numerous volunteers helped set up, organized event registration, raffle ticket and t-shirt sales and distributed water and snacks throughout the evening. Ten instructors gave of their time to keep the crowd, which totaled over 70 people, energized and dancing the entire two hours. In addition to ticket sales and raffles, the Zumbathon was supported by several local businesses and individuals, including two local artists, Larisa Martino and Donna Cabrera, who created beautiful backdrops for the event.
