The grounds of the Cranston YMCA were crowded on Saturday, Aug. 17, as the nonprofit Back to School Celebration of Rhode Island hosted one of multiple gatherings across the state.
Lammis Vargas, who represents Ward 1 on the Cranston City Council, served as the site coordinator for the Cranston event, during which approximately 1,000 backpacks and school supplies were distributed to local children and families.
Over the course of 20 years, Back to School Celebration of Rhode Island has provided more than 16,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local children.
A number of exhibitors set up during the event to provide information on community resources, and participants also enjoyed music, raffles, and free hamburgers and hot dogs.
