Sailing into spring
BRINGING UP THE REAR: Edgewood commodore Jeff Lanphear after fouling another competitor and having to complete a penalty circle found himself in the back of the fleet. At least it gave him a great view of the competition.
MAN WITH THE COUNT: Stuart Malone, appropriately attired for winter conditions, manned the race committee boat, giving countdowns for the start of each race and keeping score as boats crossed the finish line.
DON’T BE DECEIVED: It may appear the wind has the fleet heeled over, whereas to maximize what little speed they have, sailors tilt their rigs skyward while seeking to give the hulls the preferred position. Here Catherine White seeks to overtake a competitor.
PRIZE TABLE: Bill Sawicki, one of Edgewood’s racers, and his son Will, an up and coming sailor, look over the prizes many of which were donated by members of the Marine Trades Association. Jonathan Howard arranges the display outside the house that has served as club headquarters since Edgewood burned to the water a year ago.
SQUEEZED AT THE START: Ghosting along in whatever zephyrs they were fortunate enough to find, Sunfish sailors vie for the preferred spot on the starting line.
The Sunfish is arguably the most fun sailboat on the planet. These little things are quick, provided there's wind and super forgiving, if you turtle just grab her centerboard roll her back over, continue sailing. The best thing, you are the Captain and crew, you get to steer the boat and trim the sails. very cool.
