Scorpio putting together impressive freshman campaign at Salve

Torie Scorpio’s fine freshman campaign to date earned much-deserved recognition on Monday as the Cranston native and La Salle product was tabbed as the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s rookie of the week.

She earned the honor for her performances in a pair of contests in which she was a key contributor for Salve Regina.

On Jan. 17, Scorpio poured in a career-high 25 points in the Seahawks’ 81-39 demolition of Nichols in which she shot 8-of-12 from the field with three of her field goals coming from beyond the arc.

She also chipped in with 11 rebounds, four assists, a pair of steals and a blocked shot as Salve won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

However, the Seahawks’ bid for three-in-a-row was derailed on Saturday by the University of New England, with the Nor’easters winning the contest, 57-45.

Scorpio led all Salve scorers in the setback, notching 13 points while also grabbing eight rebounds in 38 minutes of play.

In her first season at the collegiate level, the former Ram has become an instant contributor for the Seahawks, leading the squad in points per game (13.1) and field goal percentage (38.4), while her 28 steals places her second on the team.

Scorpio and her teammates will be looking to return to winning ways this Wednesday on the road against Western New England before coming home to take on Curry on Saturday.

In the latter contest, the Salve five will be looking to put an end to an unwelcome trend; they have yet to taste victory on their home court this season.

Hackett victorious in season debut

Cranston West alumna Michaela Hackett made her indoor season debut for Abilene Christian on Jan. 15 at the Texas A&M Team Invitational in College Station, Texas, showing no signs of rust as she took home a first-place finish in the 3,000 meters.

The former Falcon, who redshirted during the cross country campaign alongside her twin sister Alexandria, returned to the track in style for the Wildcats with a time of nine minutes, 35.24 seconds.

Her victory was far from a foregone conclusion, however, as she only snatched top honors on the final lap by overtaking Baylor’s Lindsey Bradley, who finished 2.5 seconds behind.

Hackett recorded a personal-best in the event, which also went down as the second-fastest time in program history, just under 1.5 seconds off the record owned by her sister.
