Michael Brissette, the director of dining services at the Scandinavian Home in Edgewood, estimated he’d make 60 burgers, 50 hot dogs and 40 pieces of barbecued chicken on Thursday. He needed to make so many because it was lunchtime, and all the attendees, from Cranston’s police officers and firefighters to senior members of the home, had an appetite for a cookout on a sunny, 80-degree afternoon.
The cookout was dubbed “First Responder Appreciation Day” by Suzanne Cesana, marketing director for the Scandinavian Home, and was held on June 14, Flag Day. She said the last time they held this cookout was five years ago, but they wanted to “show some respect for the first responders” in Cranston and to promote community involvement with them.
There are around 74 residents in the skilled nursing section of the nursing home and an additional 40 in assisted living. Cesana thought that nearly all of them would turn out for the Thursday cookout.
