Springing into a new season

Posted

Edgewood Yacht Club members turned out in droves Saturday to spruce up the premises – above and below the mean high tide – in preparation for a series of events to mark a new sailing season, and also an uncertain future.

On April 24 at 7 p.m., the membership will meet at the Hall Library to review three options for a clubhouse to replace the elegant Victorian structure that burned to the pilings in a winter storm two years ago. A fourth option would be not to rebuild, but that seems remote. Then the club will hold an open house on April 29 where those interested in joining the ranks will get to learn about the historic club and its plans. Soon after, on May 19, the club will hold opening day that includes a continental breakfast, presentation of flags by the Pawtuxet Rangers and a blessing of the fleet followed by a “burger burn.” And that’s just the start to the 2012 season, says Rachael LeBlanc, the club’s social secretary. On June 17, the EYC will conduct a neighborhood party. And naturally, it continues with racing and sailing instruction. Operating from a trailer, Brown sailing is based at the club and uses EYC docks that were spared from the blaze. Also, thanks to a donation from Brewers East Marina, the club will get 13 docks that will be arranged into a 40’ x 24’ dock to be used by small sailboats.
