Rhode Island Students of the Future, with support from National Grid, will offer a four-day professional development program for teachers and informal educators interested in creating educational programs using the LEGO EV3 robotics platform. The full four-day course is $100, with fee waivers available for those who demonstrate need. To register in advance go to docs.google.com/forms.
Hosted by Rhode Island Students of the Future, these professional development programs will include hands-on, open-ended design projects to help adults learn to use LEGO hardware and software.
The program will focus on effective implementation: how to share engineering and coding concepts with students in a school-time or after school setting. This program is open to any K-12 teacher, informal education provider, community youth leader, ‘First Lego’ League coach or member of industry interested in learning about LEGO design, engineering and robotics. Participants will learn the basics of building and programming LEGO EV3 robots, including how to use the motors and sensors and gears, as well as how to use these as tools for STEAM learning.
All materials will be supplied by Barrington Middle School, it is not necessary to own a LEGO EV3 kit or computer to enroll in this course.
The beginner (those with little or no previous experience) course will be held from June 25-28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Barrington Middle School in Barrington. Registration is $100, with a partial fee waiver available.
The refresher/intermediate/advanced course will be June 27-28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Barrington Middle School for $50, with a partial fee waiver also available. The programs are supported by National Grid, Textron Charitable Trust, and the Verizon Foundation. Beginners attend all four days. Those with previous EV3 experience should register for the June 27-28 only.
