Such doing it all for Falcons
Will Such has become a versatile force for Cranston West.
The Falcons have had their struggles thus far, but the play of Such has certainly shone through as a bright spot.
To start the fall, Such was set to be West’s heartbeat on defense, not playing a major role on offense.
But, as of late, he has developed into the Falcons’ go-to guy on the offensive side of the ball, taking the bulk of the carries out of the backfield.
Such gashed East Providence’s defense for 86 yards on Friday night, averaging over six yards per carry, and compiling two touchdowns. Both scores came in the first half, one in the first quarter and the other in the second, with the first coming via a 54-yard dash to the end zone.
Such’s second score came on a 4-yard run just minutes after he pounced on an East Providence fumble to give his offense possession.
Against the best defense in the state, Bishop Hendricken, the previous week, Such also notched a rushing touchdown, as he has accounted for three of West’s last four touchdowns.
The junior captain may be flying under the radar because of West’s lack of success thus far, but make no mistake about it, Such is developing into one of the better players in the state as just a junior.
And he will be looked upon to lead the Falcons on and off the field as they enter three must-win games to end the regular season.
West will have a favorable matchup against Woonsocket this week, and it will conclude its slate with winnable games against St. Ray’s and Central as it looks to make a push for the fourth and final playoff spot in Division I-A.
It’s not easy winning three straight games in the state’s top division, but having a player like Such, who can sway momentum in several facets of the game at any time can certainly play in West’s favor.
If West is able to turn things around down the stretch, Such will undoubtedly be a big reason why, as he’s proving that he’s tough to contain on both sides of the ball.
