Tacos for $2 at Xaco Taco

Have we found a deal for you!

Every day between 3 and 5 p.m., Sundays through Thursdays from 10 p.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., you can order your choice of four delicious, made-to-order tacos for only $2 each.

The modern Mexican restaurant is located at 370 Richmond St. in Providence in a former BBQ spot, just minutes from Edgewood/Pawtuxet and Governor Francis (the route many Cranston and Warwick residents take in and out of Downcity).

Xaco Taco has a full menu of authentic tacos available all day and night, most at $3.75 each or $10.50 for a pair with Mexican rice and beans. They can also be made for vegetarians and vegans.

We have tried all five $2 specials, ordering three each for a tasty meal that costs less than a fast food hamburger joint.

Joyce’s favorite is the Wild Mushroom: sauteed mushrooms, rajas poblanas, queso fresco and arbol frita. Mine is the Beef Short Rib Barbacoa: Guajillo chili braise, mezcal salsa, borracha, fried onions and radish. You don’t need translations, just trust that the Mexican ingredients are delicious and the portions are generous.

The tortillas are handmade daily with organic and non-GMO corn. You can add chapulines (grasshoppers) and guacamole for $1 each.

The Al-Pastoris are made with spit-roasted pork, pineapple and salsa divorciados, while the chipotle chicken tinga uses braised chicken thigh, queso Cotija and cream.

You must try the Dark Chocolate Chicharron cookies for dessert. Four hot donut-hole type pasties are sprinkled with cinnamon with a chocolate dip ($3). We will be back to try the Fried Oyster and the Baja Fish Taco ($3.75 each) and their Mexican pizza, made with pork, avocado, refried beans, charred salsa verde, quesillo, Fresno chili on a grilled corn tortilla ($12.50).

Xaco Taco is a large, rustic-style environment, doing a large bar business in the front, outside tables in good weather, smaller tables and booths in the middle, plus accommodations for larger groups. Stop at the open kitchen behind the van and compliment the chefs who are busily frying tortillas, chopping meat, and mixing the multitude of ingredients that goes into their delicious tacos.

Their phone number is 228-8286. Check them out online at xacotacori.com.
