(Sci-fi turns into
teen romance)

“The Space Between Us” starts out with real potential for a unique sci-fi story, then quickly turns into a rebellious teenager love story.
The premise is interesting. NASA sends a group of astronauts on a four-year journey to Mars, unaware that a crewmember is pregnant. Gardner is born and his mother dies in childbirth. The boy is raised by the astronauts, and we catch up with him as he turns 16.
There are long discussions between the Mars astronauts and the scientists on Earth over whether Gardner can ever travel to Earth.
An interesting question is raised: Could a person born on Mars adjust physically and mentally on Earth?
Gardner is eventually sent back to Earth, where he finds Tulsa, his only friend on the planet, a rebellious, lonely teenage girl who had been his pen pal. The rest of the movie involves the young teens running away from the scientists who want to save his life.
The chase is long and unbelievable, as Gardner is determined to find his father, while his heart is having problems adjusting to Earth’s atmosphere.
How can this movie possibly end happily?
The writers have stretched the area of credibility here.
Rated PG-13 for some profanity and sexuality.
