V-Day events aim to end violence against women

Posted

Hundreds of women gathered at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet this past weekend to attend both the Red Tent Event and “The Vagina Monologues,” produced and directed by Nancy Rafi.

Rafi has been producing and directing the play about women, by women and for women to stop the cycle of abuse for 12 years. “The Vagina Monologues” was written by playwright, activist and performer Eve Ensler and is performed around the world in February or March in 45 languages and in more than 120 countries. One in three women will experience sexual assault in her lifetime.

V-Day, as the event is called, also awards a “Vagina Warrior” each year. This year, the organization Edesia, a non-profit organization located in Providence, received the award with Maria Kasparian, the director of Operations, accepting the award. Edesia is dedicated to the treatment and prevention of malnutrition for vulnerable children in the developing world. The company produces high quality, ready to use foods for developing countries and those torn by war or poverty.

Cast members this year for “The Vagina Monologues” were Megan Andelloux, Kim Baker, Abbey Brooks, Lisa Bruneault, Kerry Burns, Mary Jane Condon-Bohlen, Jessica Hassell, Janice Kennedy, Lulu Locks, Heidi Martini, Sarah Puerini and Kristy Wiencis. (Herald photos by Steve Popiel and Meri R. Kennedy)
