The Hugh B. Bain Middle School Knights were shut out 12-0 on Monday afternoon by the Warwick Vets Hurricanes in softball.

Both Bain’s Taylor Simoneau and Warwick’s Alyssa Twomey threw complete games.

Simoneau struck out eight for Bain.

“Taylor did awesome,” Bain manager Alyssa Deion said. “She definitely was pitching well with quite a few strikeouts.”

Twomey struck out 17 for Vets and gave up just one hit with three walks.

Warwick got on the board with two outs in the top of the first when Twomey socked a shot down the first baseline, which rolled by the right fielder, and that allowed the hitter to come all the way around to score, putting Vets up 1-0.

Then, in the second inning, Vets tacked on three more runs.

With two outs and runners at second and third, Gillian Brown rocketed a routine fly ball to left field, which was dropped the left fielder, and that allowed both Jenna Lucia and Gianna Paolino to come home, while extending the Warwick lead to 3-0.

Next, Genna D’Amato belted an RBI single through the middle and scored Brown, which increased the Hurricanes cushion to 4-0.

After three scoreless frames, Vets added on five more runs in the sixth.

First, D’Amato ripped an RBI double to center and drove in Alayna Medina, which put the Hurricanes up 5-0.

Next, Sophia Chevian smacked a two-run triple to left field, which scored D’Amato and Brown, while upping the Warwick lead to 7-0.

Then, Jenna Alteri, the third baseman, socked an RBI single to shallow center, which scored Chevian and ballooned the Vets advantage to 8-0.

After that, Adrianna Pettinato belted a liner to right, which went in and out of the glove of the right fielder, and that allowed Alteri to score from second, putting Vets on top 9-0.

Warwick capped the afternoon with three more runs in the seventh.

The first came when D’Amato belted an RBI single to left, which scored Medina, making it 10-0.

Then, Twomey drove in D’Amato with a base hit, and that extended the Vets cushion to 11-0.

Lastly, Chevian chopped a ground ball to the second baseman, which was overthrown on the relay to first, and that allowed Twomey to score, upping the Warwick buffer to 12-0.

Bain’s lone hit came when Ziladi Natareno hit a single in the second inning.

“Ziladi Natareno, our shortstop, she played great,” Deion said. “She was a solid player.”

Deion also gave credit to her starting first baseman and catcher.

“Our first baseman, Valarie (Samos), and our catcher Gabby Rosario, she kind of runs the field,” Deion explained. “So, she did a great job as well.”

With the loss, Bain falls to 1-4 in the league and 2-4 overall. The Knights played at Western Hills on Wednesday afternoon, however the score was unavailable at press time. Bain plays next on Monday, May 13th at 3:30 p.m. at home against Park View.
