Pebble Beach, Augusta, TPC Sawgrass, Mulligan’s Island Golf and Entertainment, these are some of the top golf destinations in the country, right?

Mulligan’s Island isn’t at the level of some of the others on that list, but what people do not know if that one of the top 10 master club fitters in the world has his shop set up right here in Rhode Island, at Mulligan’s.

“Personalizing your equipment will increase your confidence, improve your results, and add a new level of fun to your golf game,” said Tom Spargo, owner of Spargo Golf.

Spargo has been a club fitter for over 20 years and has been Rhode Island’s Clubmaker of the Year from 2004 to 2010. Spargo works with both Brown University and the University of Rhode Island’s golf teams.

“Tom has an innate ability to understand what to do beyond the technology and you can’t get that knowledge and ability from big box stores,” said Greg Burke, associate athletic director at URI.

Spargo has been working with URI for 10 years and serves as a mentor to many of the players while they are in school.

Mike Hughes, Brown’s men’s golf coach and the teaching pro at Mulligan’s, feels that working with Spargo provides a key technical element to his team and customers.

“He’s an invaluable aid to a teaching pro because he provides my clients with clubs that fit them correctly and that makes it easier to teach them,” said Hughes.

Spargo’s customers come from all over the country; some come to see Spargo on their vacations just to have a chance to do a fitting with him. Last July, 60 percent of Spargo’s fittings came from out of state.

“Our objective...is to establish a partnership with our customers. We take into account player’s goals and physical challenges, if any exist. With precise attention to detail, crisp, solid golf shots will be repeated, time and time again,” Spargo said.

As far as the economic crunch placed on people, it seems as though they are limiting what they do in the golf world, but not eliminating it.

“These people might have left their private clubs, but they didn’t quit playing,” he said.

Spargo’s business was up 50 percent in July over the previous year.

The ability to take someone’s game and tweak it based on their clubs is an art that takes years of experience and practice. Spargo can take a club and measure the frequency of its head, the weight of the club and the point of inertia that the club head will strike the ball.

“If someone comes in and tells me that the seven iron is their favorite club, I can take the rest of their irons and make them match the frequency and inertia of that club,” said Spargo.

Club length, flex, and lie are accounted for to be sure clubs perfectly match a player’s height and needs.

“Custom building is predicated on proper custom fitting; once we know exactly what a player hits best and gives optimal performance, we can use math models to build a set of finely tuned custom golf clubs,” said Spargo.

During the golf expo on Feb. 13 and 14, he booked over 70 fittings and believes that business will continue to grow as the season nears.

“Southern New England is lucky to have one of the best club fitters in the country, in the world, right here,” said Burke.

Spargo started working on his own clubs in college and when club-making organizations sprouted up in the mid 1980’s, he joined the Professional Clubmaker’s Society (PCS) and the Golf Clubmakers Association (GCA). These groups provided him the opportunity to educate, train and work within the profession.

If a person’s clubs cannot be fixed exactly the way they want, Spargo can custom build an entire set from scratch.

“If you have a service of value people will come,” said Spargo.
