13th Annual Classic Car Show

After a two year hiatus, the 13th Annual “Cause for Paws” Classic Car Show roars to life on Sunday, June 12. There will be antiques and classic cars, plus all corvettes, custom, muscle, hot rod, rat rod, exotics and fire trucks. There is a $15 entry per car – registration is from 9 a.m. to noon and trophies are given at 2 p.m. For spectators, admission is free. Proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Warwick Animal Shelter. Rotary Club of Cranston to hold Touch a Truck

Nothing but Net

Nothing but Net will be held at Cranston East on May 14 at noon and end on May 15 at noon. Stephanie Coro will be shooting 100 foul shots every hour on the hour for 24 hours! In addition there will be the following challenges on Saturday: 1 p.m. Mayor Ken Hopkins vs Governor Dan McKee; 2 p.m. Chris Coleman (VP at West) vs Sean Kelly (Principal at East); 5 p.m. Cranston Police vs Cranston Fire; 7 p.m. East Boys and West Girls. On Sunday at 9 a.m. there will be an Open Challenge vs. Denny DeJesus, CEO of Special Olympics Rhode Island. Summer Concert Series

Cranston Public Library announced this year’s Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the Cranston Department of Parks and Recreation. The concert series features eight performances, at the William Hall Library, beginning June 30. All concerts are free and open to the public and will take place on the William Hall Library front lawn. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and snacks to make the most of these free, family-friendly events. Traditional concerts will take place on Thursdays, June 30 - August 4 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. June 30, Whiskey Rhode; July 7, Gemini; July 14, The Dick Clarks; July 21, Nightlife Orchestra; July 28, Bandemonium All Star Jazz Band; August 4, Nervous Breakdown – A Rolling Stones Tribute. Concerts for kids and kids at heart will take place on July 12 and July 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 12, T-Bone; July 19, Toe Jam Puppet Band. William Hall Library is located at 1825 Broad St.

 

The Invisible Immigrant Community

Most people would be surprised to learn that there were Chinatowns in Rhode Island. On May 16, Brown scholar John Eng-Wong will tell the history of immigrant Chinese communities in our state, why they settled here, the unique difficulties they encountered and how they managed to succeed. This is a virtual program sponsored by the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society. It begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to all. For the Zoom link, register at info@eghps.org. Pet Supplies Fundraiser

Pet Supplies Plus in Cranston will host a fundraising event from May 8 through May 14 to benefit the rebuilding efforts of Foster Parrots Sanctuary. Last year, a third of their facility was burned in a fire and killed nearly 100 birds. Located at 171 Sockanoseet Cross Road, Pet Supplies Plus is collecting bird chew toys for donation along with monetary donations at checkout. Half of the proceeds from dog washes on May 13 and May 14 will be donated as well.

 

Theatre Summer Programs

The Rhode Island Youth Theatre Summer Programs will have two summer programs at the Historic Park Theatre and Event Center. “The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition” is for ages 7 to 16 and will take July 25 through August 6. No experience needed. Shows will take place August 5 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and August 6 at 7 p.m. The second program is “The Music Man, Jr.” which will run from August 8 to August 19. Comedy Night Fundraiser

Sts. Rose & Clement Parish, 111 Long Street, Warwick is holding a comedy night fundraiser presented by Funny4Fund$ on May 21.  Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.  This adult only (18+) event will feature church appropriate comedy, raffles, 50/50 and the drawing of the Grand Raffle winners. BYOS (bring your own snacks). Beer and wine will be available for purchase. AARP Martha’s Vineyard Trip

AARP Chapter 2210 has planned a Martha’s Vineyard trip for July 7. Bus pickup from the Exit 6A Park & Ride at 8 a.m., return time is approximately 7:30 p.m. Cost is $129/person. Trip includes motor coach transportation, ferry ride from Falmouth, guided bus tour of Martha’s Vineyard and sightseeing in Edgartown with a stop at Bertucci’s for dinner on the way home. Pasta Dinner Benefits Homeless

The St. Mary’s Feast Society will hold a special pasta and meatball dinner to benefit the family, created around MAE Organization for the Homeless’ signature meal, pasta and meat sauce. The event will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. on May 14. Tickets are $25 per person and a table of 10 is $200. Tickets are available at the Feast Society located on Phenix Ave. in Cranston.

Bring your family for a hearty pasta dinner complete with garlic bread, salad and dessert! They will have Italian music, a photo booth and awesome raffles!

 

Pre-K Lottery

The RI State Pre-K lottery is now open – this lottery will run until July 6. Children who will be 4 before Sept. 1 may qualify. To apply, visit www3.ride.gov./PKL.

 

Parks and Rec Summer Employment

The Parks and Recreation Department is currently taking summer employment applications until May 27. Applications are available online only through the Parks and Recreation website and Facebook page. Completed applications can be emailed to Recreation Program Coordinator Scott Sevegny at ssevegny@cranstonri.gov. Applicants can scan or take a photo of the application to be emailed.

Applicants must be Cranston residents and at least 16 years old by the time of employment. Please note that by submitting an application, the applicant is not guaranteed a summer position with Parks and Recreation. Open positions will be based on need and the number of returning employees from last year.

 

Clean Up of Pocasset Historical Cemetery

The Cranston Historical Cemeteries Commission (CHCC) will sponsor a Clean Up at Pocasset Cemetery on May 21. CHCC is participating in the RI statewide Historical Cemetery Awareness & Clean Up Day.

The Clean Up will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at RI Historical Cemetery #2m located at 417 Dyer Ave. Please bring gloves and gardening tools. For more information, call 451-7718.

 

Summer camp

The Parks and Recreation summer camp will run from July 5 to August 12 and registration goes live at 7 a.m. on April 25. A Google Forms link will be posted on that day and time. No payment is necessary at the time of registration. Parks and Recreation will invoice you, which will serve as your confirmation for your child’s attendance. Payment is due in full prior to the start of camp. Weekly and all summer rates. Four locations -- both age groups will be at all four locations. Age groups are 6-8 year olds and 9-12 year olds. Schedule will be posted prior to the start of camp.

 

Women and Infants Hospital 2022 Gala

There will be a celebration of mother and earth on June 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the WaterFire Arts Center located at 475 Valley St., Providence. This event is important for raising critical funds for a new labor and delivery center at the hospital. Art Show for Animals

Donate animal-themed art to the Community Art Show which will benefit the Defenders of Animals, Inc. The third annual art show will take place on May 14 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Governor Sprague Mansion at 1351 Cranston St. Defenders of Animals invites you to enjoy free food, wine, music, raffles and animal-themed art by local artists. 100 percent of proceeds go to Defenders of Animals. Cranston Spring Festival

Join Cranston Police for their spring festival on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 100 Sockanosset Cross Road (rear). Featured Speaker

Italian American Historical Society member Bernadette Conte will be the featured speaker at Santa Maria di Prata, Cranston, on May 15 in the event honoring our mothers. Her book, “Under the Pear Tree,” fulfills the commitment she made to her mother Caterina (Gaetanina) Cardi Capotosto, to write her family’s history. This book is an account told by one Itrani family of the difficulties and struggles the Italian immigrant experienced at the turn of the 19th century in Knightsville, Cranston, Rhode Island. The event starts at 11 a.m.
