7th annual Gill golf tourney beats the heat

The seventh annual Ron Gill Jr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation’s golf tournament was held July 20 at the Cranston Country Club, in near 100 degree heat, on the day before Ron Gill Jr.’s birthday. He would have been 33 years old. A sold-out event, the tournament is held each summer as one of several throughout the year in order to raise money for the scholarship foundation, which has given out over $125,000 in college scholarships since Gill’s death in 2007. This year’s tournament had some extra special guests, four Coast Guard servicemen, Abel Flores, Christian Parker, Robert Cook and Josh Yarger, who made the trip to Rhode Island to participate in the event.

Gill’s brother, Jonathan, was in town for the event as well, and he spoke just before tee time, giving a special shout-out to the servicemen who were present as well as to his father, Ron Gill Sr. He noted that he got a first-hand view of all that goes into putting on an event of this magnitude, and he credited his father for his efforts.

“I know why he does it, I just don’t know how,” Jonathan Gill said.

After a moment of silence, the golf tournament kicked off, with over 144 golfers and 225 guests at the dinner following the tournament.

The PS3 Ronald A. Gill Jr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity organization. All proceeds benefit scholarship recipients. For more information about the foundation or to donate to the scholarship fund, visit the website, www.rongilljr.org/default.asp.
