“A Beautiful Noise” continues through Saturday

The cast of “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical” spent the past two weeks rehearsing at the Providence Performing Arts Center after spending three weeks rehearsing in New York City.

We caught up with them last week as they took a brief rest from 12-hour days without a chance to get around Providence.

American Idol winner Nick Fradiani, who plays the younger version of Neil Diamond, was looking forward to reconnecting with friends from Lincoln and classmates from his alma mater, Wheaton College.

While most of the cast members on the 25-city tour are new to the show, Fradiani played the leading role on Broadway.

Lisa Reneé Pitts plays the doctor and is looking forward to her first time in Providence. Her favorite Diamond song is “Shilo.”  With a BFA from Rutgers, she is looking forward to her first tour after a distinguished Broadway and off-Broadway career.

In the musical, she asks the older Diamond (Robert Westenberg), who’s on stage during the entire show, about different emotions he’s felt throughout his life and how they inspired certain songs. The cast captures those moments in some of his most memorable songs.

Hannah Jewel Kohn plays Marcia Murphey, Diamond’s second ex-wife, and she remembers the first time she heard a Diamond classic.

“I was at a bar mitzvah in New Jersey and the band played ‘Sweet Caroline.’ People went crazy singing along. There were so many happy faces,” she said.

The show continues at PPAC through Saturday, Sept. 28. Tickets are available online at www.ppacri.org/events or by calling the box office at (401) 421-ARTS (2787).
