A special dining experience at Huck's Filling Station

My son-in-law called to tell me about having dinner in an old gas station in East Greenwich – Huck’s Filling Station, located at 4654 Post Road.

“Four of us shared this short-rib platter for $86. It had great short ribs, veggies and grits.”

The menu also listed an eight-piece Fried Chicken Tower with biscuits, gravy, mashed potatoes and greens for $48; a 56-ounce Prime Tomahawk Ribeye with hand-cut fries, marrow butter and baby greens for $86; Grilled Whole Market Fish with grits and a cucumber-green tomato relish for $56; and a Smoked Pork BBQ Platter with a pound of pulled pork, full rack of spareribs, barbecue sauce, potato salad, slaw, baked beans and Texas French toast for $70.

Since there were only two of us, we decided on two small plates and a shareable.

One of the plates had three large shrimp covered in nduja sauce and shellfish butter, served over a piece of mouthwatering cornbread that nicely soaked up the sauce ($14).

The Maine mussels were served in a bowl with green garlic curry, which gave them and small bite and delicious taste, accompanied by grilled bread ($14).

The six large Grilled Asparagus were smothered in a goat cheese cream and topped with fried onions, cured egg and tobiko ($12).

All house cocktails cost $13 and are “crafted to be enjoyed without substitutions.”

Da Bar Guy explains: “This menu is designed to encourage you to test your pallet, venture out of your comfort zone, and try a variety of different flavors to enhance your overall dining experience.”

Nude Portraits is a blend of lemon-honeysuckle vodka, aperol, lavender, chamomile, champagne cordial and citrus.

Rose Colored Lenses contains mint-raspberry pisco, cucumber vodka, elder, Campari, guava, lemon, rhubarb bitters and soda.

There is a small wine and beer list, none of which I had ever heard of.

Sweets are $9, and include Peanut Butter Pie, Ricotta Panacotta and Pecan Pie.

It is obvious from this review that Huck’s Filling Station is like nothing else in Rhode Island.

Sitting at the foot of the Hill District, across from the East Greenwich Armory and the old post office, it looks like an art deco structure. There are still remnants of the old gas station with an overhead door, large windows, limited indoor and more extensive outdoor seating.

A bit on the pricy side, it offers a special ambiance and culinary adventure that make it a special place that food lovers need to experience.

Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. During the pandemic, there is a 90-minute time limit on dining.
