(Ice Age survival tale)
If you want to see something different, where the hero is not a Marvel superhero but a young man who lived 20,000 years ago, go see "Alpha.”
Keda (Kodi Smit-McKee) is the son of a tribal chief living the primitive life in a barren land somewhere in Europe back in the Ice Age. He goes on his first buffalo hunt and is met with near disaster, as a buffalo sends him over a cliff, landing on a narrow ledge far below. There is no way the tribe can save him, so they must leave him to die.
We won't tell you how, but Keda survives and is nearly eaten by a pack of wolves. Like Keda, one of the wolves is seriously injured. The two save each other and nurse each other back to health, slowly learning to trust each other and bond in order to survive. Keda names the wolf Alpha and the two share adventures as they make their long and dangerous journey back home.
"Alpha" is one exciting and touching "boy and his dog" story that offers good messages for youngsters.
While Keda's father tells him that life is for the strong, Keda has compassion in his heart that makes him strong. A great lesson, and a great way of telling it.
The movie was shot in British Columbia and brings you back 20,000 years with its realism.
Rated PG-13, with some scary moments.
