Cub Scouts earn Arrow of Light Awards

Congratulations to nine local young men from Cranston’s Pack 6. On Jan. 31 at St David's on the Hill Church, Cranston’s Pack 6 Cub Scouts received their Arrow of Light Awards. City Council President Chris Paplauskas was on hand to pass out each award and bring greetings from the City.

The Arrow of Light award is the highest Cub Scout award available. The award goes to Cub Scouts who have completed the Webelo's rank and prepares them to become members of a Scouts BSA troop. Arrow of Light is its own rank, marking a milestone in a Cub Scout's growth.

Receiving their Arrow of Light was Luca De Palo and Massimo De Palo from Oaklawn Elementary School. Andrew Macomber from George R. Martin School; Evan Impagliazzo from Woodridge Elementary School; Domenic Voccio from Stone Hill Elementary School; Jacob Bajer, who is home schooled; Michael Caniglia, John Henry Rose and Gavin Cahill from Glen Hills Elementary. (Not pictured is Evan Impagliazzo from Woodridge Elementary School.)

“Scouting means being able to do things outside with my friends. It means helping the community,” said Caniglia. Macomber stated that scouting has been important to him because he makes good friends and gets to do good things while having fun. He wants to go to Yawgoo and have fun while learning more about scouting, and his goal is become an Eagle Scout like his big brother.

Jacob Bajer also has a goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. “Scouting helped to make new friends and work for community as a team,” he said. Hs favorite memory was coming in third place in a Pinewood Derby in Narragansett Council Competition in 2019.

Some of the requirements for the Arrow of Light include being active in your Webelos den for at least six months since completing the fourth grade or for at least six months since becoming 10 years old. (Being active means having good attendance, paying your den dues and working on den projects.)

They also must complete each of the four Arrow of Light required adventures: Building a Better World, Outdoor Adventurer, Duty to God in Action and Scouting Adventure.

The De Palo brothers have a goal to become an Eagle Scout just like their two cousins Zack and Nate who are Eagle Scouts.

“They look up to their older cousins and are proud of them. They have had such great experiences in scouts ever since they joined in Kindergarten. They are the only two in this group that attained the Lion rank it was a pit program in 2016. They have had six wonderful years in scouting. They have gained such confidence in public speaking and have loved helping out the community at events like Scouting for Food. They look forward to becoming Boy Scouts in March at crossover,” said their father, Alan De Palo.

“Scouting means doing the right thing, helping others, and having fun with your friends,” said Rose. He said that so far his favorite scouting memory was the CSI crime scene badge.

Between memories of Yawgoo to Pine Derbies, making friends was stated by every Scout. They are making solid memories as they grow with Scouting.

For Dominic Voccio, “Scouting has taught me survival and first aid skills as well as the importance of helping my community. My goal is to one day become an Eagle Scout like my father.

My favorite Scouting memory is going to all the Pack activities, like camping, hiking, pinewood derby, and community service events.”

The seven rays of the Arrow of Light represent wisdom, courage, self-control, justice, faith, hope and love. The Arrow of Light is important. It is the only Cub Scout Badge that can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform.

The Webelos’ program has two major milestones – the Webelos’ rank badge to be earned toward the end of fourth grade and the Arrow of Light to be earned in fifth grade. The final part of Webelos is bridging over into a Scouts BSA troop selected individually by the scout.
