Artist Jackie gets inspired by the after hours with new EP

A lot of the times when folks go see an amazing show, a certain festive feeling stays with them and they want to bring it somewhere else. Hence the after party usually happens at a person’s apartment, a band’s practice space or even an artist’s studio. Speaking of artists, Artist Jackie has been ripping up Providence’s music scene over the past few years with an infectious electropop sound. Usually when she performs live she’s joined by West Warwick resident Jamie Tavares who handles the beats and tones under the name Beat.Co Viamental or as “The Wizard”. This time around, Jackie went with a very minimalist approach while making her new Party After Last Call EP that came out on November 26.

Rather than work with her live performance compadre on the EP, Jackie decided to connect with a family member to make the record. Their technological setup was pretty simple which is amazing given the quality of how everything sounds.

“I made it with my brother Steve who goes by Dadelynn as a producer,” Jackie says on the making of the record. “Jamie has nothing to do with it but he rocks it live. I wanted to put something out that was fun but also slightly serious but in a non-pandemic way. I didn’t want to write about lockdowns or politics. It’s influenced by after hours at The Parlour in Providence and late nights at Studio Blue in the same city with memories of my friend Ziggy Coffey skating in the hallway.”

“At the same time, there’s also a bit of the dark side of being out after 2am,” she adds. “Steve and I recorded it all on an IPad with a 20 dollar karaoke mic on his kitchen table in Attleboro, Massachusetts.”

Jackie’s vocal delivery in each track gives off a funky and soulful vibe. It’s kind of like if Prince went down the new wave, trip hop route, especially with how charismatic the music is. This description is echoed in the tracks “Firefly”, “IDGAF” and “Chasing The Feel”. That subtle darkness she mentioned is present as well, which nails down that feeling of the unknown that comes with being out late in the evening. I also enjoy how each song in the EP brings forth its own substantial quality, there isn’t any filler or anything that feels like it was rushed or just included to be a bridge rather than a gap.

Tavares is currently working on a live album that features recorded sets from The Artist Jackie Show which has been broadcasted via Facebook Live on Monday nights since the middle of last year. This particular album should be out sometime in 2022 and to keep track for updates and announcements, follow their Facebook page at facebook.com/TheArtistJackie. To give the Party After Last Call EP a listen, log on to Jackie’s Bandcamp page at artistjackie.bandcamp.com. It’s a good record for anyone who is familiar with the night owl lifestyle that’s often accompanied by a drink, a smoke and whatever else. It’s also a good record for anyone who knows the risks that come with that way of living.
