Mattress Fundraiser

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 29, Cranston’s Combined Percussion will host a mattress fundraiser in the Cranston East gym. Mattresses include top-quality name brands like Simmons Beautyrest and Therapedic Mattresses. Up to 50 percent off retail prices. Community Barn Dance

Warwick Center for the Arts (WCFA) is offering a community barn dance in its gallery on Jan. 21 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The event will feature live folk music, a caller and contra and square dancing. At 7:15 p.m. there will be an opening session/beginners dance lesson. No experience is necessary. Individuals should wear comfortable clothes and non-street shores. Yoga in the Gallery

Join Warwick Center of the Arts (WCFA) every Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for an all-level yoga experience. You will learn to stretch and strengthen your body with breath and movement. Modifications are provided. Tuition is $12 per class and $10 for WCFA members. Payments can be made in person when you arrive for the class or online. Explore the ‘Woony’

 “Please donate to the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council to help us continue to restore the Woonasquatucket River and Greenway,” the organization asks. “Your donations also provide cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities for youth, adults, and families. Thank you!”

The Explore the Woonasquatucket Recreation Series is made possible with support from REI Co-op.Pre-registration is required for the hikes. Upcoming hikes include the Stillwater Scenic Trail at 10 a.m., Jan. 7. This roughly two-mile round trip walk will follow along sections of the Woonasquatucket, including Stillwater Pond. You’ll see some of the buildings remaining from Stillwater Village, some remnants of the railroad spur that served the mill complex, and pass by dams that created these ponds – reminders of RI’s thriving industrial past. On Jan. 21, hike Olivia’s Forest Hike at 10 a.m. This is a short, 0.7 mile hike, but it is delightful and has some tricky spots to traverse. Arthritis Exercise Class

Join the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center on Tuesday and Thursdays from Jan. 3 to Feb. 9 at 1:15 p.m. for an arthritis exercise class. You may think that exercise and arthritis don’t go hand-in-hand, however, research has shown that exercise is an essential tool in managing arthritis. This low-impact physical activity course is designed to keep your joints flexible and muscles strong, sleep better and increase energy. The center is located at 1070 Cranston St., Cranston. Hearing Loss and Dementia Presentation

Join the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center (1070 Cranston St., Cranston) at 1 p.m. on Jan. 18 for a program on hearing loss and dementia. Is there a connection between memory loss and hearing loss? Could hearing loss be making you forgetful or are we looking at the beginnings of dementia? Many studies have found an association between untreated hearing loss and dementia. What can be done now? Youth Ushers Program

PrepareRI Internship Program

The 2023 applications are now open for the PrepareRI High School Summer Internship Program. If you are, or have, a rising senior this summer, this paid opportunity is an excellent one for college or career resumes. Students attend a one week paid ($15/hr.) boot camp which prepares them for interviews and work-related skills as well as helps them to determine things like their strengths and weaknesses, and then are matched to a full-time, paid ($15/hr.), five-week summer internship that gives them hands-on, real world work experience in a possible career interest. Hundreds of students across RI participate in these internships and the application process is a multi-phased process including submitting essays, a resume, participating in an orientation and interviews. It is an amazing opportunity for all students. If you are in need of appropriate work clothes, technology or transportation, PrepareRI will work with you.


Color and Calm

Adults are invited to drop by Cranston Public Library’s Auburn branch every Friday from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. to color. The library has coloring books, mandalas, colored pencils and markers available, as well as herbal and decaf teas and soothing music. Decompress and head into the weekend refreshed! Vintage Hollywood NYE Ball

Welcome 2023 with a vintage Hollywood-era ball at the Historic Park Theatre and Event Center on Dec. 31. The event starts at 9 p.m. and ends at 1 a.m. There will be DJ Kabeza, OG Pauly D and special guests! Dancing, hors d’oeuvres, champagne toast and more. Teen Team at Central

Join Central library on Jan. 9 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for teen team. This group meets on the third Monday of the month through May. (If there is a Monday holiday, they meet on the second Monday). Members help plan library programs and discuss community issues. Members receive one hour of community service for each meeting attended. Registration is required. Dungeons and Dragons

Join OneCranston Health Equity Zone on Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for Dungeon and Dragons at the Huddle Center (70 Gansett Ave., Cranston). The games will take place on the second Saturday of every month. There will be one room for youth and one room for their guardians. Guardians are required to stay if their youth is participating. However, they are also welcome to join the youth. Ages 10 and older are welcome.


Free Movie Night

The Gamm Theatre (1245 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick) is hosting free movie nights where individuals can enjoy their favorite films in stadium theatre seating. The theatre will show “The Prestige” at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16. Drinks and snacks will be available to purchase at concessions. No tickets necessary.


Join Phillips’ Chime Choir

Phillips Memorial Baptists Church (565 Pontiac Ave.) is looking for children ages six to 10 who are interested in participating in a Chime Choir led by Minister of Music Martha Sobaje. The rehearsals won’t be too long and will occur at 11:15 a.m. after church on Sundays. This is an exciting and fun opportunity to learn music and a great way to meet others. Call for Poetry Submissions

Notable Works Publication is working with Crosswinds Poetry on the third edition of “Voices of the Earth: The Future of Our Planet.” The theme is awakening a resolve for rediscovery, resolution, adaption, growth and a call for continued action. Poets accepted for the publication in this book will receive a complimentary copy upon completion. Three prizes will be awarded from entries. ($100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.) Poets may submit up to three original works not previously published, each one formatted in Times New Roman, not exceeding 60 lines (which includes title and any spaces in-between). No more than 66 characters on each line (which includes spaces and punctuation). The submission period runs from Jan. 1, 2023, to Feb. 15, 2023 at midnight. MAE Organization Gala

OneCranston Health Equity Zone is starting a new initiative with the Cranston Herald and local photographer Timothy McFate called Humans of Cranston; they will be interviewing Cranston residents to gain a deeper understanding of and celebrate those who live here.
