The Edgewood Garden Club will hold a Bake & Plant Sale on Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market, in the Shriner’s parking lot at One Rhodes Place, off Broad Street in Edgewood.
The club will be selling home-baked goods, notecards created by members, colorful chrysanthemums and perennial plants dug from members’ gardens. Those include hardy natives well-suited for local growing conditions such as joe pye weed and coneflowers, as well as plants to perk up garden beds like lavender, iris, and prickly pear.
Proceeds from the sale will help fund the club’s activities and ongoing civic beautification projects at Stillhouse Cove, the Village Playground and William Hall Library. The club was established in 1933 and will soon celebrate its 90th year improving Edgewood and Pawtuxet Village parks and streets, providing gardening education to the public and promoting floral design and horticulture. Cranston Animal Shelter will have a pet supplies giveaway from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 17 at 920 Phenix Ave. There will be dog and cat food, dog and cat treats and dog and cat supplies – while supplies last. The event will be sponsored by the Cranston Police Department and local rescue groups/shelters. Come meet Cali the therapy dog.
The Church of the Transfiguration at 1665 Broad St., Cranston, will have a large Yard Sale on Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rain Date Sept. 24. Clothes will be 50 Cents each or $5 a bag. There will be a large selection of jewelry, kitchen supplies, seasonal accessories, bedding and more.
The East Greenwich Art Club will have its annual exhibit of members’ artwork at the Cranston Public Library (140 Sockanosset Cross Road) from Oct. 1 to Oct. 28. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Please check the library’s website for their current hours. There will be a reception on Oct. 8, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., where you can meet the artists. Region Church is a brand new church that will launch on Sept. 25. The church will hold its services at Cranston High School East on Sundays at 11 a.m.
Teens can volunteer to clean up the trash on William Hall Library’s grounds and surrounding area from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 17. Volunteers should sign up with the teen librarian to participate. Cranston Public Library invites guests to attend a special presentation on Finding Your Female Patriots by Jolene Mullen, author of Connecticut Town Meeting Records during the American Revolution. Mullen will describe how to find and document patriotic service by women during the Revolutionary War. The event will take place in Cranston Central Library’s James T. During the month of September, the Department of Public Works is picking up bulky waste free of charge. Residents must call Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 to schedule a free bulky waste pick-up. Pick-ups will be limited to one scheduled trip with up to three items per residential unit. Bulky waste does not include mattresses, construction debris, TVs or electronic goods, white goods or any household trash/garbage bags that would fit in the city provided 65 gallon cart or overflow bags.
After five years, Cranston Public Library’s book sale is back. The library is in need of community volunteers to assist in looking through a wide variety of books and sorting them into the appropriate categories in advance of the sale. They also need volunteers to help set up the sale, during the sale with checkout and payments and general straightening of the sale tables. There will be two optional brief pre-sale get-togethers for all volunteers. One on Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. and another at 5 p.m. at William Hall Library program room. Proceeds from the efforts of community volunteers go to support library programs. The book sale will take place Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The next meeting of the Regina Coeli Society of St. Mary’s Church will be held Sept. 21. Mass will occur at 6 p.m. in the upper church, followed by the monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in the parish center. All interested Catholic women are invited.
Cranston East (the Emerald City) invites the community to its homecoming parade on Sept. 23. Arrive at 5 p.m. and step off begins at 5:55 p.m. sharp. The parade proceeds down Park Avenue to the Stadium for the homecoming game.
Help maintain and beautify Cranston’s waterfront gem – Stillhouse Cove – while meeting neighbors and having fun! The Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association (stillhousecove.org) and Save the Bay are looking for volunteers for Saturday morning, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to help with clean-up and light maintenance. The meet up point is at the park (on Narragansett Boulevard and the bottom of Chiswick Road in the Edgewood section of the city). Bring your gardening gloves if you have them! The Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement and care of the Stillhouse Cove saltmarsh and park.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BBBSRI) will host its annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake (BFKS), on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lang’s Bowlarama in Cranston.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is the fun and easy way for individuals and companies to make an impact on the local community — it only takes a little bit of effort to raise the money that is vital to our program’s success. Fundraising teams collect donations and then celebrate their success by attending a local bowling party.
There are two ways to support Bowl For Kids’ Sake: One, individuals can sign up in teams of five to participate in a private bowling party, and raise donations from family, friends and colleagues leading up to the event — with a fundraising goal of $100 for each participant ($500 per team). The Comprehensive Community Action Plan is holding a free, virtual teacher assistant training program from Oct. 17 to Oct. 27. Almost two years ago, Phillips Memorial Baptist Church embarked on a search for a new pastor. During that time, the church was served by three phenomenal interim pastors. Phillips Memorial will now hold an installation for its new pastor, Rev. Dr. Amy L. Chilton.
A pastor’s installation service is an important event for both the pastor and his or her congregation. Bring Your Own Improv and the Warwick Center for the Arts have a common interest in educating youth. It is with that in mind that BYOI created a program in 2014 for teens, to teach them improv as well as self-confidence and problem-solving skills. The Youth Collective meets every Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Warwick Center for the Arts. For each two-month session, youth take four weeks of workshops followed immediately by four weeks of shows.
Youth must be between the ages of 13 and 18 and no previous experience is required. Parental permission is required. The $245 fee must be paid in order to hold a youth’s spot. The workshops include lessons, the shows and free admission to the 7:00 p.m. shows for participants. WCFA Members may purchase the workshops at a rate of $195. Join East Greenwich Art Club at the East Greenwich Recreation Center, 1127 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich, for its “Drawing the Line,” workshop on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local, professional artist, Mi Ok Song will be the instructor. Her drawings of the human figure and animals are done with colored pens on paper. They reflect the harmony between humans and nature in a whimsical, representational and playful manner. Using pencils, pens, charcoal, colored pens and colored pencils, on paper, you will learn how to draw a definitive, confident line to create a drawing. Song will discuss how to utilize composition, prospective, proportion and negative space. She will also discuss values, darks, lights, shadows, foreground, middle ground and background. You will also learn how to create animals, objects, portraits, self-portraits and landscapes.
East Greenwich Art Club will hold a “Painting with Gouache” workshop at the East Greenwich Recreation Center, 1127, Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich. This two-day workshop will take place Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon and on Oct. 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Contemporary realist, Lorena Pugh, will spend the first day instructing how to use gouache, an opaque, watercolor medium. Participants will do practice experiments to get a feel for and create a small painting. The second day will be working in the plein air park area behind the East Greenwich Recreation Center. In case of inclement weather, we will work from a still life inside the building, using black boxes. Participants may bring whatever still life items they want to paint.

Grey Sail Brewing will be there from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18, Narragansett Beer will be there from Sept. 23 to Sept 25 and Proclamation Ale Company will be there Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. On Fridays, the beer garden will be open from 4 p.m.t o 8 p.m. On Saturdays, it will be open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays it will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The beer garden is open to the public – no cover charge. 2022 Celebrate the Movement
Special Olympics, Garden City Center and the Cranston police Department’s Office of Community Outreach will host a 5K run and walk-a-thon on Oct. 23. There will be a community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the Cranston YMCA (1225 Park Ave.). Cranston Police will host its Harvest Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 24 at 100 Sockanosset Cross Road (rear). The second annual Cranston Arts Commission Gallery will be held from Sept. 2 through Sept. 28 at Cranston Central Library (140 Sockanosset Cross Road). Exhibiting artists will be the finalists of the Bright Box Project, a public art initiative aimed at beautifying utility boxes throughout the city. These artists include Cory Bergeron, Forrest Curl, Ryan Dean, Carolyn Jayne, Kyle Machado and Sharli Polanco. All final works will be professionally photographed and on display at the gallery, in addition to other pieces from the artists’ portfolios.
A Gallery Night will be held on Sept. 14, from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. to honor these artists and bring awareness to the Bright Box Project, an initiative the Cranston Arts Commission intends to continue for years to come. Bright Box Project artists will be present to discuss their works. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
OneCranston Health Equity Zone is starting a new initiative with the Cranston Herald and local photographer Timothy McFate called Humans of Cranston; they will be interviewing Cranston residents to gain a deeper understanding of and celebrate those who live here.
