The Bishop Hendricken cross country team would run past Cumberland by one point to claim its 27th state title on Saturday at Ponaganset. The Hawks finished with 63 points to beat the Clippers’ 64, while Barrington placed third with 125.

“We knew it was going to be difficult. We have a young team and will have five great guys coming back, only two seniors. Normally, you win at states with your seniors, but all five of our guys worked hard. It was important going into the season to have depth and they built it through working hard. They did that. All of them,” said Hendricken coach Jim Doyle.

The Hawks received key contributions from multiple underclassmen, especially freshman state champion Colby Flynn, who finished in 14th place and was the team’s second best runner on the day.

“He ran remarkably well for a freshman that was under the pressure of a varsity state meet. He won the freshman state meet a few weeks ago and shined at the varsity state meet. His goal was to make second team, All-State and he did,” said Doyle.

The Hawks are set to return much of their same lineup next fall, immediately placing them as the favorite to win No. 28.

“I think (our team) can be a lot better. With those five guys coming back, that core, the young guys we have as freshman and on JV, we have some talented guys. If they stay dedicated and continue to work hard, we should have an excellent team for next year,” Doyle said.

Cumberland did not leave empty handed, though, as the girls flew to a first-place finish with 79 points while La Salle finished second at 116.

Here are some of the results from the event:

BOYS

Jack Moretta finished fifth for Hendricken while the Hawks occupied 14-17, with finishes from Flynn, Will Olsen, Sam Zabbo and Ollie Ide in that order. BJ Kerachsky took 25th for the Hawks while Pilgrim was led by Tyler Boudreau in 31st. Joshua Maynard led Toll Gate finishing 35th, while teammate John Maynard placed 42nd.

Jacob Silva took 46th for Hendricken, while Pilgrim’s Jack Smith and Jordan Lopes took 47th and 48th, respectively. Toll Gate’s Rhontahn Vega took 82nd for the Titans, followed by teammate William Goodine in 89th. Liam Holmes finished 96th for Pilgrim, followed by Toll Gate’s Oisin O’Donnell in 97th.

Cranston West was led by Matthew Petit who finished 59th while East was led by freshman Cohen Brinker, who placed 71st. East’s Cameron Felici finished in 91st.

GIRLS

Lilliana Prendergast led Cranston West with a 41st place finish while teammate Talia Petit placed 79th. Cranston East’s Jessica Chin took 81st.

Pilgrim was led by junior Keaney Bayha who ran to a third-place finish for Pilgrim. Alison Pankowicz finished ninth for Toll Gate. Pilgrim’s Tiffany Blanco finished 58th, followed by Toll Gate freshman Mea Ayotte in 72nd. Toll Gate freshman Anna O’Donnell placed 84th for the Titans.
