Bolts get win over Davies in play-in

The Cranston East softball team’s comeback season continued to roll this week as it competed in the Division III playoffs.

The Bolts had a big win in the play-in game when it beat Davies on the road, 10-6 to advance to the first round of the double elimination playoffs.

Undefeated Mount Saint Charles would top the Bolts 7-2 to drop them to the losers bracket.

Nevaeh Fatorma led the Bolts at the plate against Davies, going 4-for-4 with three RBI while Jaylanie Rosado finished 3-for-5 with an RBI. Estrella Rivas and Mariah Means-Waldorf also knocked in runs for East.

“It’s very exciting. After many defeats last year, it feels good to come back and do to teams what they did to us. We have girls that want to be here and want to advance in the sport. All the dedication in practice, all the commitment. We didn’t take it lightly, we were shaking in our boots on the bus ride here. We just showed them that Cranston East is nothing to take lightly,” said Rosado, who is playing in her first postseason as a senior, after the win at Davies.

Trisha Lizarda got the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings and allowing three runs while racking up six strikeouts.

“It’s so awesome. They’re making these phenomenal plays in the field, getting big hits in the outfield, it’s amazing to watch all the work that they’ve put in come together,” said East coach Jordan McHale. “Each and every day they have been getting a little better and it’s because they are so willing to learn. They take that information, and some of these kids are going home and working on it which is crazy, not many kids do that.”

The East bats were hot in the home stretch of the regular season as East scored 17 runs in the regular season finale as well. Confidence has led to some big offensive performances.

“We’re just ready to hit. They want to hit so bad and they’re no longer going up there scared or looking for a walk. They want the big hits. They’re ready to take it on, they’ve prepared for this all year. That confidence is there,” said McHale.

The Bolts took a 1-0 lead in the third inning against the Mounties and would go on to lead 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Mount bats took off, though, getting three runs in both the fourth and sixth to run away with the win. Means-Waldorf knocked in a run while Lizarda struck out two batters.

East took on Exeter-West Greenwich on Tuesday in the losers bracket, but the results were not available at press time.
