CWLL softball 10’s return to regionals

The Cranston Western Little League softball 10’s rolled to the state championship last week at Tiverton Town Farm, going 3-0 in the tournament and outscoring opponents 41-1 in the process.

This was the second straight season that this group of girls won the state title, as 11 of the 14 girls returned from the last year’s group that won as 9-year-olds. The team will now head to Pennsylvania to compete at the national tournament once again.

“It is a very strong group of girls that have made a very big commitment to softball in their life pretty much year-round. It’s a combination of girls continuously working really hard and parents making the commitment to allow their daughters to do what they want to do,” said CWLL coach John Fontaine.

CWLL won the opening round matchup against Warwick North 11-1 and then would roll past Barrington 15-0 the following game. CWLL would win the clinching game against North last Thursday by another 15-0 rout.

Depth and versatility helped lead the team to the lopsided wins, according to Fontaine.

“We have six pitchers in our lineup and all 14 girls can hit. They have really developed in an amazing way. The pitching was there, and at Cranston Western we believe in flexibility and hitting. Our team is very deep,” Fontaine said.

Although the team has a regional win in its sights, Fontaine and his staff have also been preaching living in the moment.

“Number one, enjoy the moment and realize how much work has been put in to getting where they are at. We are there to win, we’re there to represent Cranston, Rhode Island, but this is an experience,” Fontaine said. “This is all about the girls, this is for the families, we just need to enjoy it as much as possible and work hard when we’re out there.”

The CWLL 10’s include: Gabriella Rossi, Hailee Stinson, Ella Lamarre, Alexa Okolowitcz, Isabella Marcano, Olivia Graziano, Camdyn Speck, Angie Field, Lawson Bastia, Julia Fontaine, Juliana Borges, Aria Koenig, and Isabella Farina.
