By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston West boys soccer team took home the annual City Cup matchup over rival East on Sunday, winning in a 4-2 shootout at the stadium. The two teams were knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation which would be the official result in the league standings, but the clubs went to the shootout for city bragging rights with the Falcons emerging victorious.

“It was really exciting, it was a lot of fun. We had about 10, 12 former players there that stormed the field at the end which was really exciting to see. They really enjoyed themselves,” said West coach Ethan Lincoln.

Nathan Evans scored West’s lone goal while team leading scorer Carlos Andrade scored for the Bolts. Andrade, as well as West’s Jordan Thibodeau, were named the game MVP’s.

The Falcons have been one of the hottest teams in the state this season and improved to 6-1-3 with the win. East fell to 6-3-3 overall with the loss, but is still in strong position for a playoff berth.

“Anytime that you can compete with a team like that, it’s a good thing,” said Lincoln. “This may be just another league game, but for them, it’s more than just that. To go up against a team like that and finish with that result, it always keeps the spirits boosted going in to the final a few games of the season.”

Depth has been key for the Falcons, who boast one of the most experienced overall lineups.

“We’ve got a very strong team this season, we have good players at every position and that has been the most important part so far, it has been a team. We don’t have those one or two superstars that take over the team. It has taken all 11 guys plus the bench to come together to work through this tough schedule,” Lincoln said.

Although the Falcons have picked up some wins, they have also had some tough battles that could have gone either way. Lincoln hopes that these matchups will pay dividends come next month’s playoffs.

“We’ve had a few games here that we’ve really had to grind out. The Mt. Hope game, the Lincoln game, those were tough battles. It should be a good thing though, it does not allow us to have over-inflated egos going into the playoffs. The boys know that they’re going to have to fight for it,” said Lincoln.

The Cranston West and East girls soccer teams were also in action for the City Cup. Instead of the two teams squaring off against one another, the teams were blended into two units and faced each other in an exhibition. West coach Jeremy Sherer coached one squad while East coach Brianna Oakes took the other. Team Sherer went on to win 4-3.

West’s Maddie Alves scored a pair of goals for team Oakes while East’s Lily Guyon added the third. West’s Emily Webb netted a pair of goals for Team Sherer while Julia Robbins and Kylie McCreavy added the others.

McCreavy and Alves were named the game’s MVP’s.
