The Cranston West girls outdoor track and field team made history this past weekend when it shocked the state and won the Class A Championship at Coventry High School. It was the first Class A title in program history.

Ailani Sutherland won both the 100 and 200 dash for West. The Falcons relay team of Maddie Alves, Mikaya Parente, Sutherland and Lindsey Hobin won the 400. Parente also won the long jump for the Falcons, while teammate Juliana Bucci finished first in the discus.

“We knew that we had strengths in our runners and relays, but we also knew that we would need our jumpers to hit. They did, everyone that we needed to hit did. Our discus thrower also won, we got a fourth-place finish in shot put, we couldn’t have done it without full team contributions. We needed those points,” said West coach Rebecca DelNigro.

Sutherland continued to build on her breakout year last season with her two victories.

“She has a bright future ahead of her, she is every coach’s dream. She has the dedication to work hard but she also has talent. When you put those two things together, magic will happen,” DelNigro said.

With the state championships less than two weeks away, the Falcons are looking to stay focused at the task at hand.

“At this point I don’t think they are thinking much about (the big picture). I think they are still kind of in shock about winning the class meet and I think they are just going with it,” said DelNigro. “They are just focused on performing their best.”
