East boys win, girls take 2nd

The Cranston East swim teams put on a show at the Division II Championships last week at Roger Williams, as the boys took first place and the girls second.

The boys placed first with 360 points, beating second-place North Providence by 20 points. The girls came up one point short against the eventual winner North Providence.

“We swam really good, we swam great. For the girls, that was pretty unexpected. We only had nine kids that could score, we kind of felt like we needed one more body all year, but the girls were phenomenal. They were disappointed, obviously, but they swam great,” said East coach Bob Bouchard.

Bouchard was especially proud of his veteran leaders for stepping up on the big stage.

Aidan Carpenter swam really well and should be competing at states, Bradley Procaccini also did very well and will be in that same position. Those guys should be able to make the top-8,” said Bouchard. “Eden Fisher swam well in the 200 and the 100. We were anchored most of the year by her and Aislinn Baxter. Millie Wignall was also a great addition for us, we wouldn’t have been here without her, as well as the freshmen and sophomores that have stepped up. Without all of them we wouldn’t have been in this position.”

East will now shift its focus toward this weekend’s upcoming state championships at Brown University. Bouchard and company hope to place high, and potentially break a handful of school records. Win or lose at states, the Bolts were excited to once again hoist some hardware at divisions.

“They worked hard all year, we were focused on this meet all year. We came up short against Portsmouth earlier in the year but didn’t have one of our top guys, so that put a chip on their shoulder,” said Bouchard. “They really wanted to do something special at the division meet, they had it penciled on the calendar all year. This was our state meet.”
