Cranston holds annual Will Speck race

Hundreds of runners and walkers from around the state celebrated Father’s Day in Cranston on Sunday by participating in the Will Speck Memorial 5K. The event is in its ninth year, and the 5K race was as popular as ever, with over 350 participating.

William Sanders of Wethersfield, Conn., was the top overall finisher, and he broke a two-year old record set by former Rhode Island Cross Country state champion Tom Webb. Sanders crossed the line in 15:09. Eric Lonergan of North Providence finished second, Jeff Howley of Providence took third, Greg Beaudette of Johnston finished fourth and Brian McGovern of Woburn, Mass., rounded out the top five. Kaitlin Wilson of North Kingstown was the top female finisher, and she took 14th overall in 18:23. Stephanie Beaudette of Johnston was second among female finishers, Emily McCaffrey of Warwick was third, Jennifer Wardell of Providence was fourth and Arianna Colella of Cranston was fifth.

Daniel Hawkins was the top finisher from Cranston. He took eighth overall.

The day also included kids’ races before the main event. Proceeds from the race go to the Providence Ronald McDonald House and the running programs at Cranston East and West.
