Police are continuing to investigate a reported explosion or “boom” that many residents said shook houses in the area early Monday morning.

Via Twitter, Cranston Chief of Police Col. Marco Palombo said his department is working directly with the Johnston Police Department and is actively seeking the help of residents in determining the cause of the incident, which was heard shortly before 8 a.m.

Through social media, residents throughout the city, and into Johnston, reported a loud noise that shook homes and set off alarms.

Palombo said neither department received direct reports related to the incident.

Responding to theories brought up through social media, Palombo tweeted that neither demolition work at the former Cranston police station on Atwood Avenue nor the PJ Keating Sand & Gravel site on Phenix Avenue were the cause. The demolition began at 7:05 a.m. Monday and involved no explosives, he said, while PJ Keating has conducted no blasting in several weeks.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, which operates the Central Landfill in Johnston, also posted via Facebook that nothing occurred on its property.
