By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston Western 10’s won the softball state championship last week, rolling to a 19-1 win over South Kingstown. CWLL also topped South Kingstown 17-1 in the previous game, while beating Barrington 17-1 in the opening round of the tournament.

Many girls on the team have only been playing the sport for a year now, which also forced the players to bond quickly and learn to play as a team on the big stage.

“It was exciting. These girls play in other leagues like rec and travel, so for them to all come together collectively to represent Cranston was a great experience. It’s something special,” said coach John Fontaine. “Outside of just a few girls, the majority of the kids just started playing softball last year. Between CLCF and Bombers, the girls have developed so much over the past year to get us to this spot.”

This was also the first time since the days of Cranston National Budlong that the city put together a youth softball team under the Little League banner. Fontaine and his staff were excited to bring the girls and families together and look to continue to build a sustainable program and feeder system in the future.

“This was about teaching the girls and their families the Cranston softball way. This was really the first summer of getting the girls and their families introduced to the Little League brand. What’s good is that we only have three girls that will not qualify for the 10-year-old team next year, so we will have most of these girls back to hopefully compete for a spot at the regional tournament,” said Fontaine.

This year’s regional tournament was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. CWLL is looking forward to carrying this momentum into the offseason and has its sights on taking it one step further next year.

“They are going to be really confident next summer. I stressed to the girls that this summer is more about getting those extra three weeks of preparation that you don’t normally get. Preparing not just individually, but as a unit of girls that will represent Cranston for years to come,” Fontaine said.

Members of the Cranston Western Little League softball state championship team included: Isabella Marcano, Lawson Bastia, Isabella Farina, Julia Fontaine, Gianna Nappi, Ella Lamarre, Aria Koenig, Angela Field, Alexa Okolowitcz, Natalie Santurri, Maggie Quinn, Olivia Graziano, Camdyn Speck, Hailey Stinson.
