Cranston's Free Farmer's Market sprouts again

Posted

Located at the back corner of the Bain Middle School track, on Thursday afternoons, there's a small and free farmer's market available for Cranston residents.

Sponsored by the Department of Environmental Management, and run by OneCranston/HEZ, it will be there until October 5, 2023.

Besides the locally grown produce, there are cooking demonstrations and booths with community resources and partners.

Something new this year, is the addition of businesses selling their wares.

"We are so excited to have Five O Five Fusion, run by Three Sisters coming a couple of times per month to sell their prepared Asian inspired Fusion of food. We also have Vivian Recinos of Guatemala Coffee Shop & Distribution coming weekly to sell her Guatemalan coffee," said Ivy Swinksi, project manager for the OneCranston Health Equity Zone

They continue to work on developing the sales side of the market further for produce in addition to this, after reaching out to local farmers they have not had the anticipated increase in offering sale items alongside the free offerings.

"We continue to be searching for local farmers interested in selling weekly at our market, and would be happy to talk with anyone interested," said Swinsky.

As for attendance, it has remained pretty level.

"Fairly on par with last year as of now, we have distributed almost 300 bags of food in four weeks, averaging about 70 bags per week," said Swinsky.

The vendors who set up regularly to sell are; 505 Fusion, Guatemala Coffee Shop and Nikki Nyne is selling her hand made earrings.

The Farmers are: Martinez Farm,, Urban Edge Farm, T. Blia Moua, Annie Tarley and Charlotte Uwimpuhwe.

The market runs every Thursday, 5:00 until 6:30, weather permitting, and while supplies last.
