CWLL 9-U tournament team wins Summer Slam

The CWLL 9-U tournament team came away with a 11-10 win in the championship of the Rehoboth Summer Slam this past weekend versus Rockland Massachusetts.

After finishing pool play 2-0, CWLL needed a dramatic come from behind victory on Saturday versus Needham in extra innings. Down by four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, CWLL scored five runs, capped off by Hunter Gilbert’s game tying base hit and aggressive base running Atory.

On Sunday, CWLL leaned heavily on Alex Fecteau’s complete game pitching performance and Gabe Tomasso’s stellar defense in the semi-finals to beat Swansea 6-5. In the championship game versus Rockland, CWLL built a 11-4 lead thanks to big hits from Nicholas Ruggieri, Seth Curran, Blake Russell and Devan Neri. Rockland battled back in the top of the sixth inning, but JJ Ortega shut the door to capture the victory for CWLL.

“I’m so proud of the way the boys competed this weekend,” said manager Nick Ruggieri. “At this age we focus a lot on body language, attitude and the ability to shake off difficult situations. We always want them to play the game the right way. I think that we were able to accomplish this while battling some great competition.”

The CWLL 9u tournament team will also be participating in the End of Summer Tournament held in West Warwick from August 24-27.

Members of the team included: Devan Neri, Jacoby Hawksley, Nicholas Ruggieri, Gabe Tomasso, Dean Magidin. Second Row: Hunter Gilbert, Seth Curran, JJ Ortega, Alex Fecteau, Blake Russell, Brenton Small. Top Row: Coaches: Cody Ortega, Greg Fecteau, Nick Ruggieri.
