Senator Hanna Gallo ( (D-Dist. 27, Cranston and West Warwick) was among six recipients honored at Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner’s third annual Distinguished Service Awards event on April 4 in the State House Library. Gallo received a distinguished service award for school construction.
“I’m proud to award the Distinguished Service Award to partners who have been vital to advancing our shared priorities of expanding economic growth, social justice, transitioning the State to a clean energy economy, and promoting financial security for all Rhode Islanders,” said Magaziner. “I sincerely thank today’s recipients for their years of service,” said Magaziner.
Magaziner said Gallo was a longtime champion of quality public education in Rhode Island. Gallo works as a speech language pathologist within Cranston Public Schools and is part of the Rhode Island School Construction Task Force that developed a plan to repair and replace school buildings across the state. Magaziner said that since 2018, the State School Construction Plan allocated more than $1.7 billion to repair or replace 189 school buildings across 28 districts which serve 101,800 students. Gallo is also the lead sponsor of 2022 legislation that would expand and extend the state school construction program for the future.
“Our students and educators deserve the best,” said Gallo, recognizing that while the current buildings have proudly served generations, steps need to be taken to ensure students have a 21st century learning environment.
Gallo recognized some of the current school construction investments including Eden Park Elementary and Garden City Elementary School.
Other individuals and organizations recognized at the event included the Town of West Warwick which received the Distinguished Service Award for Clean Energy. Reverend Howard M. Jenkins Jr. received the Distinguished Service Award for COVID Response and Advancement of Racial Equity. Detective Koren Garcia Pacheco received the Distinguished Service Award for Partnership with the Crime Victim Compensation Program. Raymond J. Sullivan Jr. received the Distinguished Service Award for Social Justice and Dr. Margaret Brooks received the Distinguished Service Award for Financial Literacy.
