To the Editor,
I am deeply troubled by the recent allegations involving Mayor Hopkins, as detailed in the lawsuit. The claims that the Mayor took an antique sports car from a local businessman and political supporter without payment, placed city-issued license plates on it, and later had it restored under questionable circumstances, raise serious questions about ethics, transparency, and abuse of power.
These allegations are not only disturbing but suggest a potential misuse of city resources and authority. The reported pressure campaign against Mr. Broccoli, aimed at coercing him to hand over the car’s title, paints a picture of intimidation and harassment by officials sworn to serve and protect our community — not exploit it for personal gain. Such behavior undermines public trust and calls into question the integrity of our city’s leadership.
The explanations provided by the Mayor’s spokesperson only further highlight the need for clarity. The inconsistencies in these accounts — such as the presence of a supposedly decorative front license plate and the dubious use of an unregistered vehicle — underscore the gravity of these allegations and the urgent need for an independent investigation. The public deserves to know whether laws were broken or if power was abused.
The people of this city deserve transparency and accountability from their elected officials. Despite an amended resolution by council, if this case is settled outside of court it seems as though the people of Cranston may not find out the true facts behind this case. We cannot afford to overlook potential breaches of trust or unethical behavior, as doing so would set a dangerous precedent for governance in our community.
Sincerely,
Lauryn Pregoni
