Young Bolts set for season

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Cranston East girls soccer team is set to get rolling this week and will be featuring a young roster with only six returning players from last fall season.

Although the Bolts are inexperienced compared to many of the other clubs in the division, they hope to learn fast and compete each game.

“The excitement of being back in a full season and full school year is really driving them, really motivating them. We still have a lot to practice, but our offensive line is starting to look good and we have a pair of sisters (in Norah and Madeline Flinn) on defense which has been fun to watch,” said East coach Brianna Oakes.

Oakes has been encouraged with the team’s effort as well as the leadership from the small core of upperclassmen.

“They’ve been leading since they stepped on the field their freshman year, that’s why they are our captains. It’s been flawless, and the effort that they have put in … their direction has been the strongest that I have seen since I started coaching,” Oakes said.

Although East will likely go through some growing pains early, Oakes and her staff hope to see the girls have fun learning and continue to grind each day at practice and during games to improve.

“They just need to get used to playing high school soccer. The girls are bigger and stronger and they play a faster pace of game,” said Oakes. “If they can get used to that then they will be fine. As long as they’re having fun being part of a team, staying committed and working hard we will be happy.”
