East golf tournament returns with gold classic

One more tradition felled by the Covid virus was the annual Cranston East golf tournament. Originally established in 2003, the tournament was put on hold for two years but made its comeback this year.

Under a bright and cloudless blue sky, the 28 golfers enjoyed camaraderie, smack talk and golf.

“Thanks to our (almost 30) sponsors, the event was extremely successful and after a two-year hiatus it was nice to begin to start the tournament tradition again,” said Tom Centore, former head coach and East guidance counselor.

Current head coach, and Cranston East 2004 graduate, Isaiah McDaniels was also pleased with the event.

“We raised $4,000 for the program. That is going to help with new uniforms and an end zone camera. I appreciate everyone that came out to support the program and golf.  I especially appreciate all the tee and green sponsors for their donations. I would also like to thank the Cranston County club for their help and support running the tournament.  I can’t wait to do it again next year,” said McDaniels.

Practice for this year’s season will start on Aug. 15, and players will sell gold discount cards the last two weeks in August.

The winning foursome consisted of Chris Medeiros George Simmons Dennis Leonardo and Jeff Pelchat.
