Edgewood Cheer squads make history

Posted

The Edgewood Eagles cheerleading squads made history on Nov. 10, when they swept through the regional championships. All four of the Edgewood teams – Junior Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Junior Midget and Midget – placed at the event and qualified for the Pop Warner National Cheerleading Competition held in Disney World the week of Dec 2-7. Three of the Edgewood teams won championships, and the fourth was a runner-up.

This is the first time in Rhode Island History that a Pop Warner Association has sent all four cheerleading levels. It’s also the first time for any team in the whole region in the past decade.

“It was an amazing day,” said cheer coordinator and varsity coach Lori Scichilone. “The girls and coaching staff worked so hard for this and it paid off. I couldn’t be prouder.”

With this accomplishment, comes the obstacle of raising thousands of dollars for the 81 girls to make the trip to Disney. Currently the teams are attempting to raise the money by sponsorship, canning and calendar sales. Any donation large or small would be greatly appreciated.

“Every bit helps,” Scichilone said.

Anyone interested in donating can visit EdgewoodEagles.org, where a Pay Pal account has been set up.
