By ALEX SPONSELLER Both the Edgewood 8-U and 12-U football teams recently won their respective state championships to earn an appearance in the New England Pop Warner playoffs.

The 8-U squad topped Warren’s East Bay Warriors while the 12-U team beat Portsmouth.

“It’s great. The teams have worked very hard from the beginning of the season. Our coaches are volunteers across the league, they’ve also put in a lot of their own time and were away from their own families. Everyone has been 100 percent dedicated, the parents have been supportive. It’s a very family-friendly league,” said Edgewood President Anthony Bucci.

This will be the third straight season that the 12-U players have won the state championship. The Eagles will next be facing Massachusetts’ Revere Patriots.

Should the 12-U team win this weekend against Revere, it will set it up for a showdown at the New England Championship the following weekend. A win there would earn the Eagles a spot in the national championships in Orlando, FL in December.

The Eagles currently boast an undefeated record this season.

The 8-U club will be taking on Brookline-Jamaica Plain, also of Massachusetts, in the New England semis this weekend. A win would also send the team to the New England Championship, which is the furthest the age bracket can play.
