The Cranston West girls volleyball team is looking to build some momentum as it takes on the back half of its regular season schedule with a Division I playoff spot on the line.
The Falcons improved to 4-8 with a 3-1 win over Cranston East on Monday night. Lanna Moua led West with 23 assists, six digs, two kills and two aces. Sarah Crowley had 10 kills and four blocks and Ciana Catelli added eight kills and six digs for the Falcons.
With eight games remaining, West will have to go on a big run in order to clinch one of the final playoff spots in the crowded DI field. West coach Tom Ferri is hopeful that the team can pick up some late season wins and is looking for more consistency across the board.
“The season is only half over, it’s a full season which is good. They’re doing a good job but we need to get more consistent in a few areas,” said Ferri. “We need to get more from our outside hitting, it’s tough to get kills if you aren’t hitting well from the outside. Defensively we have been doing pretty well, but we also need to be more consist in our serve-receive.”
The Falcons have a deep lineup and an experienced roster. Ferri will be relying on his seniors from here on out and has seen them stepping up in the past few matches.
“They’re great kids and they’ve shown great leadership since before the season even started. They have a cohesiveness and that’s always a good thing, and we have a great balance with six seniors, five juniors and five sophomores.”
With the stakes being high for the remainder of the games, the Falcons will need to play error free volleyball to pick up some wins, according to Ferri.
“We need to limit the amount of free balls, the easy balls over the net. It allows the opposition to set up their offense and then it’s tougher for us to defend. Then defensively, closing in on the block, just playing better defense overall,” said Ferri.
