The Cranston West boys lacrosse team is looking to gain some traction as it enters the meat of its regular season schedule.

The Falcons dropped their first three games of the season, but would turn around to rattle off four straight wins before losing to Providence Country Day last Friday to settle at 4-4 overall.

With guys like Matt Dillon, Joseph Cappuccilli, Jason Levy, Jordan Gooch, defenseman Kevyn Rodriguez and goalies Anthony Durante and Jacob Robert, West coach Jason Levy is confident in his group making a playoff push.

“We faced probably the three best teams in the division to start out (in Pilgrim, Toll Gate and Narragansett). We knew that we were going to have a frontloaded schedule. Then we had a bout of bad luck with the flu, so we really didn’t have a full roster until our fourth game of the season. Things started to click but then unfortunately we got bit by the injury bug, so now we have to make some changes and figure out what will work the rest of the way,” Levy said.

West has been rebuilding its program the last two seasons, and Levy has been pleased with the group’s development and selflessness to this point.

“Our program has been in a transitional period for a couple years now. The coaches have emphasized playing as a team on the field together, not pointing fingers, not getting frustrated. There have certainly been some opportunities to do that, but they haven’t and we are very proud of them for that,” Levy said.

The Falcons will now be seeing many of these teams for the second time this year, including the Pats, Titans and Mariners. Although going through the three-headed monster is a daunting task, Levy feels that his team is in a good position to compete and perhaps pull off an upset or two.

“It’s going to be huge. I think we can compete with Narragansett, our first game was very close against Toll Gate. Then against Pilgrim we didn’t have some offensive players, I think we learned a lot from that one. There will be some opportunities here for us coming up,” said Levy.
