Falcons power past Bulldogs in non-league action

The Cranston West Falcons rolled over the Westerly Bulldogs, 21-7, at Cranston Stadium on Friday night.

Senior Matt Lonardo led the way for the Falcons with two rushing touchdowns and an interception on defense.

“I felt good,” Lonardo said. “It felt good to be back for a full game. I feel like we played well but we still have a lot of things to correct.”

After the Falcons started the game logging two first downs, their drive stalled when senior quarterback Ryan Marsella threw an interception to Westerly’s Daniel Carr at the Falcons’ 45-yard line.

It didn’t matter, though, as the Falcons’ defense was stout all night. The Bulldogs would not score until the final frame.

With 2:55 left in the first quarter, Cranston junior halfback Abdiel Mendez broke for a huge run into the Bulldogs’ red zone. Lonardo followed it with a five-yard touchdown run, giving the Falcons a 7-0 lead.

After another three-and-out by the Bulldogs, Cranston continued where it left off.

Senior running back Robert Guzman ran 10 yards to give the Falcons a first down. Then, Marsella connected on a 20-yard pass with Camren Bent. Finally, Lonardo would rush it in for another touchdown. That would put Cranston West up 14-0.

The struggle continued for Westerly when quarterback Joshua Gougan fumbled the ball while trying to flip it to his running back. Cranston’s William Such would recover the fumble and run it in for the easy score, putting the Falcons up 21-0.

Westerly would finally get on the board in the final quarter when running back Carter White ran in a 1-yard touchdown to make the score 21-7.

Cranston West would play three quarterbacks in the game. Marsella started and Matt Malo entered in the middle of the second quarter.

“Last game they both played a quarter, we’re having a battle,” Falcons’ head coach Steve Stoehr said. “Whoever’s the better quarterback is going to win.”

Late in the game, sophomore and third-string quarterback Nick Dionizio also came in for some reps.

“We’re a very young football team,” Stoehr said. “We might have a lot of seniors out there, but even the seasons are ‘green.’ Marsella, our starting quarterback and Matt, they never really played in varsity games before as quarterback.”

The Falcons will begin league play on Friday night when they travel to Cumberland for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Clippers finished with a 3-5 record in Division I last fall, while West was a game behind at 2-6.
