West girls take silver at indoor track states

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League Indoor Track & Field State Championships were held last weekend and many locals made noise on the state’s biggest stage.

The Cranston West girls continued their run of success, tying for second place with 46 points while Classical finished in first with 68. Pilgrim took 10th with 23 points.

The Bishop Hendricken boys won their 31st team title with 100 points, beating second-place La Salle who finished with 87.

Here is a look at some of the top performances from the day:


GIRLS

Ailani Sutherland finished second in the 55 dash as well as the 300 dash for West. Quiana Pezza took second in the long jump for the Falcons.

West’s relay team of Sutherland, Pezza, Praise Mayson and Waimea Dodge finished second in the 800.

Sam Rosenfield finished fourth in the shot put while Pezza took sixth in the 55 dash for the Falcons. West’s Stalia Biosse placed seventh in the 600 run.

Dasani Stewart won the long jump and took second in the high jump for Pilgrim.

Alyssa Twomey finished sixth in the 55 hurdles for Pilgrim, while Toll Gate’s Alison Pankowicz took seventh in the 1,000 run and Pilgrim’s Keaney Bayha placed seventh in the 3,000 run. Pankowicz also finished eighth in the 3,000.

West’s relay team of Sutherland, Mayson, Julia Saccaccio and Reece Vitale placed fifth in the 1,600.


BOYS

St. Ray’s runner and Warwick native Devan Kipyego took first in the 3,000 run

Hendricken’s Jacob Coates took second in the 300 dash, while teammate Keith Daigneau finished in the weight throw.

Edmund Lok took third in the 55 dash for Hendricken, while teammate Troy Silvestri took third in the 3,000 run. Hendricken’s Michael Laflamme finished third in the weight throw for the Hawks.

Silvestri finished fourth in the 1,500 for Hendricken.

Elliott Gauvin finished fifth in the 600 run for Hendricken, while teammate Brayton Gazerro finished fifth in the 1,500. Gazerro later finished fifth in the 3,000 run, while teammate Jakob Reyes finished fifth in the high jump.

Xavier Wilkens finished sixth in the 300 dash for Hendricken, while Gazerro took sixth in the 1,000 run for the Hawks.

Moretta finished seventh in the 3,000 run for the Hawks, while teammate Curt Daigneau took seventh in the shot put.

Hendricken’s Ollie Ide placed eighth in the 1,000 run, while Pilgrim’s Alex Pinheiro finished eighth in the 55 dash. Will Olsen wrapped up eighth place for Hendricken in the 1,500 run, followed by teammate Keegan Tierney who took eighth in the 3,000.

Anthony Manna finished ninth in the 600 run for the Hawks, while Moretta took ninth in the 1,500 run and Olsen ninth in the 3,000.

Toll Gate’s Domenic Calise placed 10th in the 300 dash and Tierney took 10th in the 1,500 run. Alex Sjoblom finished 10th in the 3,000 run for the Hawks. Keith Daigneau finished 10th in the shot put for Hendricken.

West’s Alonso Parker-Sharpe finished fifth in the 300 dash.

Hendricken’s relay team of Jake Kopech, Lok, Wilkens and Coates took third in the 800, followed by Toll Gate’s team of Calise, Jeremie Luna, Trevor DiPanni and Mason Tanner in fifth. West’s team of Parker-Sharpe, Aiden Robinson, Jose Mirabal and Ryan Stoloff finished 10th.

Hendricken’s team of Lok, Coates, Gauvin and Noah French placed second in the 1,600, followed by Toll Gate’s team of Tanner, DiPanni, Patrick Wilson and Rhontahn Vega in eighth.

Tommy Flanders, French, Manna and Ide combined to take second in the 3,200 for the Hawks as well. Vega, John Maynard, Josh Maynard and Cian Roberts finished seventh for the Titans. Pilgrim’s team of Ian Bubar, Jordan Lopes, Jack Smith and Liam Holmes placed eighth.
